Linux

Linux, in case you have never heard of it before, is a free implementation of the UNIX™ Operating System. It came into being as a result of Linus Torvalds experimenting with the Intel™ 386 processor protected mode functions. He released the source on the Internet, and created quite a lot of interest among programmers worldwide. These programmers, headed by Linus, took on the task of enhancing Linux into the mature (although still under hectic development) operating system it is today.
The server you are reading this page from is an Intel Pentium based system running Linux, and handles web, ftp, and mail for many users without a problem. I would like to say it has never crashed, but unfortunately it has, twice - both seemed to stem from something SCSI related, so hopefully I can blame the hardware, not the software :)
